Non-Toxic Beauty: Personal Care
Well, yesterday I wrote about flatulence, and today I’m going to discuss the very beautiful subject of armpits- specifically, sweaty armpits.
I promise that tomorrow I’ll keep the gas and sweat talk to a minimum.
Until then…it’s armpits!

Most of us were taught at a young age that we should wear deodorant or antiperspirant if we ever want to have friends or any kind of a social life.
And let’s face it, no one wants to be the stinky person in the room…and no one wants to stand next to the stinky person either.
The only problem with conventional antiperspirants is that they contain aluminum, parabens, and a pesticide called triclosan, which have all been linked to breast cancer and possibly other types of cancer. They also block our skin’s natural functions causing bacteria to build up.
Unfortunately, natural deodorants have a reputation for being ineffective.
I’m going to reassure you that I have found (and use) many natural deodorants that work wonderfully. And I still have friends!
You’ll have to ask them if I smell though.
My Favorite Natural Deodorants
- Dr. Hauschka Skincare Deodorant Fresh (includes pure essential oils)
- Tom’s of Maine Longlasting Deodorant Stick (my very favorite!)
- Jason Natural Deodorant
- Kiss My Face Liquid Rock
- Naturally Fresh Deodorant Roll-On (I actually find this at Wal-Mart!)
The fun doesn’t stop with armpits, folks. We’re moving on to teeth!
Many regular toothpastes contain parabens and sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates. Not things we want to put into our mouths!
Through much experimentation, I found two toothpastes that really work well for me.
My Favorite Natural Toothpastes
- Burt’s Bees Multicare Toothpastes (though the bottles are horrible and always seem to leak!)
- Tom’s of Maine Wicked Fresh Toothpaste (the best!)

Have you ever tried natural deodorants or toothpastes? If so, what did you think of them? What are your favorites?
Have a great day!

I’ve tried Tom’s and it does not work for me
I’m just a much sweatier girl than average. In fact, I used to need prescription deodorant when I was younger. It was that bad! I’m going to look into other ones you suggested though!
Hopefully, the others work for you! Or maybe you can just use natural ones during the winter when it isn’t so hot?
I still haven’t braved the natural realm of deodorant and toothpaste. I’ve always been a little scared, but maybe I can work up some courage and try some of your recs!
I’d definitely recommend the toothpaste…and maybe the deodorant when it isn’t as hot out!
I am currently at war with my deodrant – nothing seems to be working lately – may have to check out the ones you listed above because I am having some kind of chemical reaction to my current deodrant – not a real pretty scene. I am a Crest Toothpaste & Oral B Toothbrush kinda gal. Great post – thanks for sharing about your favorite products.
I’m having the same deodorant issues too – feel like nothing’s working as well as it should, and I keep getting a nasty itch under my left arm (why it’s only my left one, NO idea!) I keep switching brands to no success so maybe I’ll try this Tom’s one! Any reco’s on where to buy it?
I buy mine at Earth Fare, but they sell it at Target and Wal-Mart. CVS might have it too.
Hi! I use Tom’s toothpate and deoderant. I didn’t realize there was a longlasting one. I will try that.
What do you recommend for natural hair removal? Do you know of any natural waxing products?
Also, I’ve been using the natural nail polishes and removers as well. Thanks for your great blog! I read it every day and often want to comment but usually find myself too busy.
I haven’t tried at-home hair removal, but I’ll look into it! I plan to do these beauty posts more regularly now. I have one coming up next week on natural nail polish.
I’ve always been too nervous to try anything natural. I guess I just ignorantly assumed it wouldn’t work as well…i’m always paranoid about being that stinky girl
If you try it, let me know how you like it! At least, if you’re stinky, you’ll still be cute!
