My favorite workout DVDs

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I’m not exactly a gym rat.  I  prefer to workout at home instead with one of the many DVDs that I have in my video library.  It allows me the flexibility to easily squeeze in a sweat session whenever I have the time and lets me do so in my pajamas or mismatched clothing.

Now that the winter is approaching, it can be difficult to find the motivation to get out of a nice cozy bed and into the cold just to make it to the gym.  So, I thought I’d share a list of my all-time favorite workout videos to help you out!

Favorite workout DVDs from The Grass Skirt

Jari Love:  Get Extremely Ripped! 1000

This is probably my all-time favorite workout DVD.  I’ve reviewed it before and just cannot say enough about it.  You can customize the workout to make it 30 minutes or 1 hour, and you have the option of doing an extra 8 minute ab workout.  My favorite part is that you can do the workout as-is or do just the cardio or just the weights.  It is so adaptable that there’s no excuse not to do it!  (Equipment needed: light and medium hand weights; aerobic step, optional)


Bob Harper: Cardio Conditioning

Everyone always says that Jillian Michaels is the tough guy (err, girl), but I think that Bob’s workout kicks her perky booty!  Once again, I’ve reviewed this one before, but it is worth mentioning again.  Bob gets into the camera and yells like a drill sergeant for about 65 minutes, and the dude in the video looks like he’s about to die.  It’s a killer workout.  (Equipment needed: light and medium hand weights)


Jari Love’s Get Extremely Ripped!  Revved to the Max

Yes, Jari Love…again.  I’m such a huge fan and pretty much have all of her workouts.  Revved to the Max is awesome because it is basically weight training with movement, so you get strength and cardio.  At one point, she says that you should be burning as many calories as you would by running on a treadmill.  Just like the one I mentioned above, this DVD is also customizable. (Equipment needed:  Light and medium hand weights; aerobic step, optional)


The Complete Physique Workout Kit

This kit is a bit pricey, but it is worth  it.  For the first time in my life, I actually have a booty!  While they claim that you’re burning calories and getting in some cardio, I find that it is more of a toning and lengthening workout.  Gotta love something that promises to make you long and lean like a dancer!  (Equipment needed:  Resistance ball which comes with the kit; light and medium hand weights; a mat or pillow; a chair)


Jillian Michaels Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism

I know that I said that Jillian isn’t as tough as Bob- and I still stand by it.  However, this is a great cardio workout- no weights or equipment required.  Jillian takes you through each set two times, and the plyometrics will really get your heart rate up! (Equipment needed: None)


Personal Training with Jackie:  Xtreme Timesaver Training

This DVD really is a timesaver!  You get a total body workout in just 32 minutes.  Even though it is brief, this workout is no joke.  Jackie will work you!  (Equipment needed: light and medium hand weights)

    Hi Karyl! I submitted my blog to Kath’s blogroll, and she was nice enough to add me. :) I used to have one on my blog, but I just wasn’t a fan of having it. There are so many blogs that I read (including Kath’s), and it just got out of control!

    Jackie is much nicer than Jillian- but they were friends and used to train together, so the workouts have a similar vibe. I like Jackie much more, and her abs are to die for!

  4. Great post, I totally get into DVD’s in the winter. How about Tracy Anderson, she’s amazing! My friend has all of her workouts, and she loves it…I have to check it out and add them into the mix for the long winter months ahead.

  5. Hi again Erin. My favorite exercise dvds are Jane Fonda yoga and Buns of Steel. As you can see my DVDs are old so I really appreciate your post.

    On another post, could you recommend any natural chewing gum?

    Jane Fonda is a classic! She actually just came out with a few newer DVDs in 2010 (I think) with the Tone It Up girls. I saw them at Target today. You might want to check them out! I used to do the Buns of Steel ones too on VHS. :)

    As far as the natural gum, I recommend Glee Gum! It is really good- and this is from a chewing gum-aholic. They sell it at health food stores, and you can find it online:

  6. I would love a DVD or Wii on Zumba – dance the calories off. I am a gym rat and love going to the gym – I need that instructor motivation. Some of our DVDs are collecting dust along with the hand weights at home. I love the ability to take classes at the gym, like spinning, Power Yoga, Regular Yoga, Zumba and it keeps me motivated. A few years back I joined Curves and about 8 months in to it I was bored and looking at a gym again. I lost weight and inches at Curves, but needed more motivation. Thanks for sharing your favorites!
