Update: Lucy the Goldendoodle

As many of you already know, Michael and I had to put our beloved dog Emma to sleep back in June (something I still think about daily).

Not long after, we got a new puppy named Lucy.

The reason that we got Lucy so quickly was to allow enough time to train her before the baby arrives.  I’ll admit that I had a few doubts regarding whether or not we’d be successful, and having a puppy proved to be a lot more work than I remembered.

However, I’m so happy to tell you that Lucy’s training has been going really well!  I cannot even recall the last time she had an accident in the house (knock on wood).

I think the fact that I am home with her pretty much all day long has really helped.

Even though she is more or less house-broken, we still have lots of work to do on chewing, nibbling, jumping, and basic commands.

In other words, I have my hands full!

Regardless of the training process, Lucy has been such a blessing.  While she hasn’t taken the place of Emma, Lucy has found her own little place in our family, and I am so happy that we got her.

In a weird way, I think she’s been like a mini-preparation for baby.

You see, I’m what you might call a “neat-freak” and having Lucy’s huge crate in our living room and toys scattered all over the place has gotten me used to the fact that my house doesn’t always have to look perfect.

Of course, I still pick up the toys and put them away 100 times a day, but I’m getting better. ;)

As far as her growth, she is turning into a giant!

Right now, she’s gaining about 5 pounds every four weeks and weighs 16.4 pounds (as of her last vet appointment on Monday).  Of course, she still wants her mommy to hold her, and it is becoming more of a challenge with my big belly!

Lucy has proven to be a sweet girl, and we really love her.  I just know that she’s going to be best buds with our little man.

Does anyone have any pointers on introducing Lucy to the baby?  I’m pretty certain that it will all go just fine, but I’d love to hear some first-hand experiences.

My sister and my mother are coming over for lunch this afternoon, so I’ll check back in later with a recap.

Have a great morning!

  2. She is getting SO big!

  3. What a sweetie. I lost my dog in June as well, quite suddenly, and I was/am heartbroken. But you’ve given me hope that someday another dog will feel right.

As for baby and dog: Have your husband bring home one of the blankets your little boy has been wrapped in. You’ll want something that smells like him. Have your husband bring it home and give it to Lucy before you and the baby come home. Let her sleep with it and sniff it and get really comfortable with it. Then the baby’s smell won’t be quite so much of a shock. Also, you might want to come inside first to greet Lucy before your baby comes in. This makes the dog feel like she’s still important to you, despite the time you’re spending with the baby. You also might want to teach Lucy to kiss the baby’s feet so she steers clear of his face and hands. Maybe use a baby doll for training.

I’m sure it will go well! It’s an easy thing to worry about, but (in my limited experience) it goes much smoother than you anticipate. :)

  4. Lucy is so lovely! I wanna give her a belly rub ;)

  5. Well at least when the wee one learns potty training (ways off) at least Lucy will be completely housebroken – YAY for that! More than likely they may be chewing toys together and hopefully their own. Good Luck with Puppy Training! Have a Great Weekend:)
