Frequently Asked Questions About Oil Pulling

Happy Thursday!

Since I’ve received so many questions about oil pulling, I thought that I’d do a little FAQ for you today.

Just keep in mind that many of my responses are based on my personal experience.  I’m certainly not an expert in anything other than Lionel Richie and Saved by the Bell trivia. ;)

Frequently Asked Questions About Oil Pulling

What time of the day is best for oil pulling?

Ideally, oil pulling should be done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (even before you’ve had anything to drink).

What type of oil should I use?

Sesame oil (not toasted), olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, and grape seed oil are all great options.

Do you melt the coconut oil or use it in its solid form?

I find that it is easier to swish when the oil has been melted first, so unless I am in a rush, that’s what I do.

Is there one type of oil that is better than the rest?

I believe that it all comes down to the individual.  However, there are multiple books and articles about the amazing results people have seen using coconut oil.

How long should the oil be swished?

The recommendation is at least 20 minutes per day.  However, I believe that something is better than nothing.  If you have to work up to 20 consecutive minutes, there’s nothing wrong with that at all!

Do you brush your teeth right after you’re done?

I’ve actually heard some people claim that oil pulling eliminates the need to brush their teeth, but I absolutely still brush mine to get rid of any residual oil.   And honestly, I can’t imagine not brushing my teeth.  Pulling and brushing combined really makes my mouth feel clean.

Is there an aftertaste?

I find that swishing with water after I spit out the oil and brushing my teeth and tongue thoroughly prevents any issues with aftertaste.

Does your mouth get tired?

Because the swishing is supposed to be done very slowly, it never wears out my mouth or jaws.

Is it safe to do oil pulling while pregnant?

Oil pulling is a completely safe and natural process, but it is always best to consult your doctor if you have any doubts- especially while pregnant.  My doctor was actually fascinated by the process when I told him about it!

How often do I need to do it?

The most common recommendation is once per day for a month.  You can pick it up again every few months as you see fit in order to detoxify. I’ve been going at it for nearly two months straight though and can’t really see myself taking a break any time soon.

If you have any more questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below.  If I get enough of them, I’ll update this post to include them along with my answers.

Have a great day!

  5. OK, so I was skeptical, but I tried it 20 minutes a day (with an MCT oil made from coconut and palm kernel) for 3 weeks. And for the first time ever, I had ZERO pimples when I got my period (a few days after I paused in pulling). I love the clean mouth feeling, but I honestly did not expect the cleared-up skin. Awesome! I’ll be starting up again in March, I think.

For how long i have to wait for eating my meal after oil pulling

    thegrassskirt Reply:

I usually wait about 30 minutes, but to be honest, I am not sure if there is an official waiting time. I just know that you’re not supposed to eat until after you’re done oil pulling. I hope that helps!
