Bulk Bin Fanatic

Before I get rolling, I’d like to share some exciting news!Β  Well, some exciting to me news. πŸ˜‰

I now have my own monthly health and wellness column with The Fort Mill Times, the local newspaper in my area.Β Β  The column is called Happy & Healthy…just like me!

You can check out my introductory article online here.

As the title of this post suggests, I am not just a Lionel Richie fanatic.Β  I am also a bulk bin fanatic.

And yesterday afternoon, this fanatic had a bulk bin shopping extravaganza at Earth Fare!

Each scoop brings me back to the good old days when my friend Michelle and I used to fill up bags from the bins at Mr. Bulky before we went to the movies.

Only we were filling our bags with sugary candy and definitely not raw cashews. Swedish Fish were my very favorite!

Anyway, look at everything that I bought at Earth Fare!

  • Raw almonds (great for snacking!)
  • Raw unsalted sunflower seeds (perfect for tossing on salads)
  • Millet (a tiny gluten-free grain that is rich in nutrients and minerals like manganese, phosphorus, and magnesium)
  • Oat groats (wonderful, fibrous, complex carbs- expect a breakfast recipe soon!)
  • Raw unsalted pumpkin seeds (loaded with minerals, such as zinc, calcium, potassium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins B, C, and E)

Shopping the bulk bins is not only fun (for dorks like me), but it is a great money saver as well.Β  You can stock your pantry for just pennies!Β  Ok, fine…it might cost you some dollars too. πŸ˜‰

My favorite thing about bulk bins though is that you can sample new foods.Β  I do this a lot.Β  In fact, I’m sampling the oat groats for the very first time!Β  Since you can scoop up as much or as little as you want, you won’t be stuck with an endless supply of something, if it turns out that you don’t like it.

Do you shop the bulk bins at your local stores?Β  Did you have a favorite bulk bin candy as a child? Aside from Swedish Fish, I also loved sour balls and Sour Patch Kids.Β  It’s a wonder that I have any teeth today…

Have a happy healthy day!

  1. Bulk bins are something I probably need to start using more. I guess I always have this irrational fear that they’re not cleaned or the stuff in them is stale or something, so I honestly kind of avoid them, but that’s probably silly. Maybe you should take me on a bulk bin shopping adventure… πŸ™‚

    • I have the same fear! I’ve heard horror stories, but I think I need to get over it πŸ™‚

  4. First of all – Congrats on the Monthly Article! My mom use to belong to a Food Co-op and it was like bulk bin paradise in there:) My go to Sweets are Swedish Fish and Jelly Beans. I love chocolate but in moderation. My one staple out of bulk bins is popcorn kernals – my spouse loves his popcorn and don’t even think of handing him a microwaveable bag of popcorn. I have also bought nuts and grains from bulk bins. Have a Great 4th of July Weekend!

Thanks for the congrats!! πŸ™‚ Your hubby and I have the popcorn thing in common. I love popcorn sooooo much! I swear that I watch as many movies as I do just so I can eat popcorn! πŸ˜‰ I hope that you have a wonderful 4th!

  5. Congrats on the column! That’s super exciting!
I love bulk bin shopping, but I always forget about half of the stuff I buy and it ends up going stale. But it’s often cheaper to buy from the bulk bins.

And I LOVE swedish fish – I used to buy 100 of them for 1.00 when I was younger. Penny candy was the bomb! πŸ™‚

  6. The column reads very happy and very nice!
    Congratulations on that. πŸ˜€

  7. LOVE Swedish Fish! Haven’t had them in ages, but they are so good! Loved reading your Fort Mill Times column! I had been curious about it. Congrats! I know you will be a hit! Hope you and Michael have a Happy 4th!
