Green Salon and Natural Haircare

So, yesterday afternoon I was making my usual 3 pm snack of carrots and hummus when I discovered the largest “baby” carrot I’ve ever seen.

Truly the Shaquillle O’Neal of the carrot world.

Sorry- he isn’t available for autographs.  He’s happily vacationing in my belly right now.

Anyway….

I didn’t just sit around eating carrots all day.   I also went to an all-green hair salon called Salon M2 for a much needed haircut.

It was my first time going to a salon like this, and I was pretty excited about it.

When I met with Lauren (my stylist), I told her that I am enthusiastic about using natural products.  She was thrilled and went on to say that everything we put on our skin goes into our blood.  Sound familiar? 😉

What makes the salon green?

Well, all of the products that they use are organic and free of chemicals.

Honestly, I’ve been disappointed in the past by some of the natural shampoos I’ve used.  They just seemed watery and ineffective.

However, this was not the case at all with the line that M2 uses called Euforia. I like how Euforia uses aloe vera in their products.  As you know, I’m a fan of drinking aloe vera juice.  I probably won’t drink the shampoo though…

A lot of all natural shampoos and conditioners have an earthy smell that isn’t always…pleasant.  But this line smells amazing.  I’ve been sniffing my hair all day, actually (please don’t think less of me).

Going to the salon was a very cool experience, and I definitely encourage you to read more about them and see if there are any green salons in your area.

By the way, I got side swept bangs and had about 3 inches cut off my hair.  So far, I really like it!

Since we’re already on the subject of hair, I’d like to share some more brands that I really like:

These are just the products that have worked for me.  Your hair might respond better to something else.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when you’re reading and decoding labels:

  • 100% Organic– contains only organic ingredients (excluding water and salt)
  • Organic– contains at least 95% organic ingredients (excluding water and salt).  The remaining 5% must be non-agricultural substances on the approved National List, or agricultural products (also on the National List) that are not available in organic form.
  • Made with Organic Ingredients– contains at least 70% organic ingredients.  The label may list up to three of the organic ingredients on the display panel (for example, “made with organic chamomile, lavendar, and cardamom”).
  • Products containing less than 70% organic ingredients may not use the term “organic” anywhere on their label, but they may identify the specific ingredients that meet USDA organic certification on their ingredient list. (Source)

And finally, always watch out for ingredients, such as:

  • Fragrance
  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • SLS (Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates)
  • Formaldehyde (found in many keratin hair treatments, so ask your stylist what he or she uses)

Have you ever been to a green salon?  What are your favorite natural shampoos and conditioners?

Have a happy healthy day!

  1. We need a picture of your new ‘do!

I want to try natural hair products too, but I honestly don’t know if they’ll work for my hair. I spend a lot of money for my highlights so I want a shampoo that doesn’t wash them out. BUT (until recently) I also swam fairly regularly so I wanted a shampoo that completely got the chlorine out. I guess I just need to play around with some different brands!

I plan to post a picture just as soon as I don’t have burned eyebrows! I look a bit scary right now… Burt’s Bees makes a shampoo for color treated hair. I didn’t like their brand when I used it, but it is worth a try! 🙂

  2. Great tips! I have never been to a green salon, and I don’t think there are any near me since I live in a small town (plus I’m pretty loyal to my stylist)…but sounds like a great idea!

It was really difficult for me to leave my old salon, but the experience was still worth it. It is SO hard to “break-up” with a hair stylist though!

I want to see your side bangs! no picture??

    • thegrassskirt

The girl burned my eyebrows when I got them waxed, so I didn’t take a picture. I am going to post one tomorrow though. 🙂

  4. I have not been to a green salon, but have been to a green spa for a facial and love the wax they use to remove those unwanted hairs. I do not use green hair products, but my hair is really healthy and probably grows about 2 inches of new growth between my 6 week appointments with my stylist. I recently chopped my hair off this pass weekend into a more stylish, easy to maintain cut and am loving it. My spouse uses tea tree & mint shampoo and conditioner for itchy scalp and dandruff – we live in a desert and if you do not moisturize could start growing scales around here.

LOL. Well, definitely keep on moisturizing then! 🙂 A green spa sounds awesome. I need to find one!

  5. I am sorry to hear about your eyebrows – ouch:(

  6. I came across a very similar carrot last week! I was shocked lol.
As for green salon? To be honest I’ve never even heard of something like that…but now I am going to see if there is one in my area

  7. I want to see a pic of your hair!!! 🙂 Also, thanks for all the wonderful info on natural beauty products. I really need to think before I rub my good old Jergens lotion all over my body! Sounds like my beauty products need a makeover!!

  8. That carrots cracks me up. hahah. I’m easily amused and that was seriously the best start to my day 🙂

Green salon? That sounds interesting! Although I doubt we have anything like that in my area… bummer.

  9. Carrot*

The other one isn’t that funny. 🙂

    • thegrassskirt

No, the other carrot isn’t very funny…but I think he has a Napoleon complex now. 😉

  10. OMG! I found this post through a search. I clicked the name of the salon, just to see what it was like… I did NOT expect it to be right here in Charlotte! I about died! Haha. Seriously, it’s only 9am and this made my day. I’ve been dying to find a green salon around here. It’s so nice to see interest in green beauty in the Charlotte area! 🙂

P.S. I think you have your Twitter linked wrong in your top banner.. it links to @the_grass_skirt. I found the correct one anyway but I thought you’d like to know 🙂

    • thegrassskirt

So glad that you found my post! I do lots of green beauty posts, so I hope that you’ll come on back to visit my blog. 🙂 FYI- don’t get your brows waxed there. They burned my skin! Otherwise, it was a great experience. And thank you for the head’s up about my Twitter link. I thought it was fixed, but I guess not! 🙂
