Healthy Reasons Why…

I thought it would be fun to start a recurring series on The Grass Skirt called “Healthy Reasons Why….” which will give you healthy reasons why you should do, like, buy, try, eat or own something.

I’m not exactly sure how often I’ll be posting these, but I think they will most likely be monthly depending on everyone’s feedback.

Without further ado, here’s the first one!

Healthy Reasons Why You Should Visit Your Local Library

  • You can borrow DVDs from most libraries (and VHS tapes, if you’re feeling nostalgic).  Aside from movies, exercise DVDs are frequently among their collections.  This is a great way to try new workouts and shake up your usual routine.
  • You can also rent CDs.  I love adding the songs to my iTunes library and then updating my workout playlist…once again, for free!
  • It gives you a reason to remove clutter from your home.  A cluttered unorganized home can make us feel uneasy which isn’t at all healthy.  Libraries love to receive books, magazines, newspapers, CDs, and DVDs.  So why not tidy up your home and donate some of your unwanted items to your local library?
  • Reading can help to improve your memory and keep your mind sharp.  This is especially important as we age.
  • It can help to alleviate stress.  Next time you go to the library, stay awhile.  The quiet calm atmosphere (and the fact that you pretty much have to unplug from your cell phone) is perfect for unwinding and temporarily escaping it all.  If you’re a chatterbox like me though, the whole “no talking” thing is pretty rough.
  • The library is packed with literary resources.  Want to learn more about Celiac Disease?  Need to learn how to lower your cholesterol?  Thinking about going green?  There are books for all of those topics and more on the shelves of your local library.  Sure, you can find a lot of that information online, but with the overflow of information on the internet, you may find that books are more trustworthy resources.
  • It saves money.  If you’re a frequent reader, buying books- whether in traditional form or on your Kindle or Nook– can really add up.  Checking out a book instead of buying one (even if just occasionally) can definitely save some bucks.  And as I mentioned above, you can save money by renting DVDs and CDs too!

Hopefully, you enjoyed the first post of this series.  Feel free to send topic requests, such as “Healthy Reasons Why You Should Listen to Lionel Richie Music”.

Totally kidding- but I bet that I could come up with lots of reasons! 😉

Do you ever visit the library?  I used to make it there more often than I do now, but I still go periodically.  And even though I have a Kindle, there’s just something about the smell of a library book that gets me every time.

Have a great day!

LOL. I’d be scared to go to the library with you! It might ruin my perfect book return record! Haha. 🙂

  2. Loving the post:) I pretty much go to the library every week. I read so much that I would be broke buying books and magazines. I love to frequent my library as well as libraries when traveling. Support your library because who knows it could go away – at least once or twice a month! Thanks for sharing:)

You’re so right. So many of the libraries in my area have either closed down and had to shorten their hours due to funding. It’s so sad. 🙁

  3. Great post and great series idea. I recently re-discovered the library and felt like the proverbial kid in the candy store…I had forgotten how nice it is to not have to worry about how much a book costs to be able to read it! And yes, it is a very tranquil environment.
