How to make your home smell like Christmas

We’ve had a real tree for the past few Christmases, but I really missed the scent in years past when we had an artificial tree.  The house just didn’t seem as Christmas-y without the smell of pine- unless I resorted to plug-ins or candles (things I desperately try to avoid as much as possible).

Even with the live tree, I still cannot get enough of all the holiday aromas, so I make my own holiday blend on the stove top using nothing but natural ingredients.

Here’s what you’ll need:

3-4 orange slices

2-3 cinnamon sticks

3-5 pine sprigs

All you have to do is fill a small sauce pan with about 2 cups of water and toss in the orange slices, cinnamon, and pine sprigs.  Set it on your stove top burner on low and let it do its thing all day long.

If you want to make the scent stronger, you can switch the burner to medium heat.  Be sure to add more water to the pan periodically as it gets low- especially if you turn the heat up to medium!

One of the great things about making this little concoction is that you can adjust it according to your personal preference (which you cannot do with candles or plug-ins).  Want the house to smell more like a Christmas tree?  Add more pine and less oranges and cinnamon.  Want it to smell very warm and spicy?  Just put in one sprig of pine (or eliminate it altogether) and go crazy with the oranges and cinnamon instead.

You can also add a few drops of pine essential oil for the full on Christmas tree experience.

I have my mixture going right now and just added in some more pine sprigs.  I can even smell it from upstairs which makes me so happy.

Let me know if you try this yourself.  I hope that you are enjoying the holiday season!
