In defense of pumpkin spice lattes

If you are anything like me, you associate the fall season with things like awesome smelling candles from Bath & Body Works, cool crisp air, wearing cozy sweaters and tall boots, picking apples, and of course, pumpkin spice lattes.   I honestly cannot imagine autumn without any of them- nor would I want to imagine such a thing.

There is a popular post floating around Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc. which calls our attention to the fact that our beloved pumpkin spice lattes aren’t exactly healthy.  In fact, they don’t even contain real pumpkin.

While I absolutely love how the piece emphasizes the importance of understanding what we put in our bodies, I am willing to bet that no one who has ever ordered a pumpkin latte has declared, “This is such a healthy choice!” (at least not in seriousness).

The whole point of ordering them, in my opinion anyway, is because they are a special treat that we don’t get to enjoy 365 days a year.  Sure, there are some people who probably go a bit overboard and run to Starbucks three times a day for the venti sized (20 ounces) latte, and that is clearly not healthy.

However, I am a huge believer that we should be able to enjoy all foods in moderation.  Swearing off everything that we like will only make us feel deprived and miserable which is no way to live.

Yes, I think that we should check food labels carefully, know where our food comes from, and buy local and organic whenever possible.  Taking care of our bodies and nourishing them with real chemical-free food is so important.

But life is short.  Drink a pumpkin spice latte every now and then.

  1. haha I had to tweet out a link to this because I SO TOTALLY AGREE. I can’t even read the FoodBabe post because it will RUIN PSLs for me and I don’t want that to happen. I get them about 4 times max during the season – I want to enjoy it!

    • A girl after my own heart! Seriously, I don’t want to live in a world without pumpkin spice lattes. I think we need to get some for our fall play dates. 🙂

  2. Love this! I read the Food Babe article on PSLs last night and was so grossed out. But your post is the second I’ve read today that defends it. While one post defended it by quoting an FDA excerpt about caramel coloring not being dangerous, I really love that you defend it with the subject of moderation. It’s so true! Gotta live life….

  3. I found the “they don’t even contain pumpkin” argument so funny! They are pumpkin spice (which is a spice I can buy in the grocery store…) NOT just pumpkin. I expect pumpkin muffins to contain muffins, and these contain the spice “pumpkin spice.” I don’t think I would want pumpkin in my coffee.

  4. Agreed! They are a special treat and I most certainly don’t consider them healthy, but just a wonderful autumn thing to enjoy at least once!
