Is it cheaper to buy local?

If you’ve been reading here for awhile, you know that I’m a huge fan of buying local produce and that my family visits to the farmer’s market are some of my very favorite things in the world.

Even if one certain family member does this the entire time…

I am always amazed at the amount of food I can purchase there for practically nothing.

I used to wonder how much money (if any) I was saving by buying my produce at the farmer’s market rather than a big chain supermarket and decided to tally it all up this weekend.

Is it cheaper to buy local

You’ll see everything that I purchased at the farmer’s market below (along with the quantities for each).

Next I’ve listed out how much everything was and the total amount that I paid on my trip.  Finally, I figured out how much those same foods would cost at the largest supermarket in my area.

Chain Supermarket Totals

As you can see, the farmer’s market total was nearly half of the supermarket total.  I didn’t realize that the difference would be that great!

Although depending on where you shop, the results might not always be that drastic, and I was actually surprised that there wasn’t a huge difference in price for items like the lettuce, corn, and parsley.

If price was my only concern when shopping for produce, I’m sure that I could definitely still buy some things at the supermarket, especially at discount stores and Super Walmart.  Regardless, I’d still prefer to buy my food at the farmer’s market…even if it isn’t always convenient.

Why?

Because I like to know where my family’s food comes from and that it is free of pesticides and chemicals.  I enjoy the social aspect and fun atmosphere at the farmer’s markets.  And I love supporting local farmers.

Taste-testing the local honey isn’t so bad either. 😉

Do you ever buy local produce?  Do you find that it is less expensive to shop at farmer’s markets?  I’d love to hear what your experience has been.

Have a great day!

Which farm market did you go to? Was it the one out towards the airport? I keep meaning to make a family excursion out there one weekend but just haven’t done it. We get the farm box every other week with local fruit/vegetables delivered but I’d love to explore the farm market for meats and other goodies.

    • Yep! It is the one by the airport (Charlotte Regional Farmer’s Market). If you’re looking for a really quaint experience, take them to the one in Matthews sometime. They play love music and it has so much character.

  2. Great Post Today! I prefer to buy local on just about everything and anything, especially food and it is important to support the local businesses too. What I enjoy about the farmers market is that you know what you are buying is mainly in season and usually tastes great. I have a hard time spending monies on fruits and veggies that just taste blah!!! Happy Tuesday:)

  3. wow i didn’t realize what a difference it made! Def sticking to my local farmers market for produce!

  4. What a contrast! I certainly need to try hitting up the farmer’s market instead of Publix!

  5. I love Farmers Markets and shop mine often.

I grow a lot of yummy things myself though so for things like Tomatoes, Oranges, Lemons, Parsley, Basil, etc I just walk outside and pick it 🙂

    Great post as always!

  7. I love supporting my market too!! We actually just signed up for a plowshare, so we’ll be getting weekly baskets of food and it’s from an organic farm! I want to prepare a blog post about it once it starts (hopefully in 2 weeks we get our first pick up!)

Love the price comparison! And it does feel nice knowing where your food comes from for sure!

  8. That’s a huge savings!
