Mommy Monday: Dealing with mommy guilt


It’s Mommy Monday again!

Today’s topic is dealing with mommy guilt and finding time for myself after having a baby.

In all honesty, this has been a bit of a struggle for me, and I absolutely suffer from mommy guilt.

Before I got my hair styled a few weeks ago, for example, my black roots were about 5 inches long.

(Hopefully people just thought that I was going for the ombre effect.)  

Even though my ends were also split and fried, it felt selfish to leave my baby while I got pampered.

I received some very generous gift cards at Christmas, so I could get some new clothes and makeup, but once again, it was hard to even consider leaving Michael for an afternoon of shopping.

But I did get my hair cut eventually, as I mentioned, and I even went shopping.

So, what (or who) persuaded me to finally take some mommy alone time?

Well, the sales at J. Crew didn’t hurt, but it was really MT, my wonderful and supportive husband, who ultimately convinced me.

Truth be told, the poor guy really had to twist my arm in order for me to accept his help- even with something simple, such as feeding the baby, so I could get some rest.

But you know what?

I realized that taking even a tiny bit of time to do something for myself every once and awhile makes me a better mother. No matter how easy-going my baby might be, all mommies need a break sometimes.

Little breaks make me feel refreshed and recharged.  Plus, it doesn’t hurt that I no longer look like a porcupine.

  3. I am the exact some way! My son is 10 months old and I still feel guilty any time I leave you my husband is great though and tries to encourage me to go and do things

    • I am SURE that I will still feel guilty when he is 10 months old. We’re both lucky to have nice husbands who kick us out of the house every now and then though. 🙂

  4. I can sooo relate! It honestly took me until my son was 4-5 months before I could leave for some time and not feel guilty or nervous. I would get out before then for nails or the odd hair appointment but didn’t really enjoy myself because I was constantly thinking about feeding times and naps. You’ll start to enjoy your “you” time eventually!

  6. When do I NOT deal with mommy guilt? It can be overwhelming. But, I am glad you took some much needed alone time! You go mama

    I still deal with this and my son is 27 months old! 🙂 I think good Mommies just struggle with guilt. But I agree that it is VERY important to have some alone time and also some “date nights” etc with the husband.
