Natural ways to prevent wrinkles (and giveaway winner)

Lately, I’ve been really into natural ways to slow down the effects of aging.

Don’t get me wrong.  I think that aging is actually a beautiful thing.  After all, crow’s feet are simply a reflection of a lifetime of smiles, right?

Even so, I’m all for preserving my youth, and there are lots of ways to do so without expensive creams or scary needles filled with poison.  Plus, you’ll still be able to make facial expressions and won’t run the risk of looking like Joan Rivers.

  • Apply sunscreen daily.  The sun’s UV rays create free radicals which lead to damaged, wrinkled skin.  That’s why it is so important to protect our skin with sunscreen every single day of the year- even in the winter.   Looking for an all-natural sunscreen?  I like Aubrey Organics Saving Face lotion.
  • Wear sunglasses.  A good pair of sunglasses (meaning ones that offer 99-100% UV protection) are not only cute, but they protect your eyes and the delicate skin around them from sun damage.  They also prevent squinting, which causes wrinkles as well.
  • Drink lots of water.  When we’re hydrated, our skin looks plumper and fuller.  Dry skin is more prone to wrinkling and let’s face it- it doesn’t look pretty.

  • Consume foods rich in antioxidants.  We’ve all heard it a billion times, but the vitamins and minerals found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables really do help to slow down the aging process.  One of the easiest ways to get your antioxidants is to start your day with a bowlful of berries.  You can also add them to your cereal or yogurt.
  • Manage stress.  There have  been many studies that link aging and stress.   In fact, stress and worry can flat out wear down our bodies.  Check out my blog post on ways to manage stress, if you need some help in this department.

  • Exfoliate your skin.  Exfoliating the skin helps to remove dead skin cells more quickly which results in smoother, brighter skin.  Look for natural brands, or try using some brown sugar as a scrub.  Dry brushing is also a great way to exfoliate the body.
  • Don’t smoke.  It’s no secret that cigarettes cause wrinkles and fine lines above the lips, but to be honest, wrinkles are the least of your worries when it comes to lighting up.
  • Go easy on the alcohol.  Alcohol is another cause of dehydrated skin.
  • Choose natural products over ones with harsh chemicals.  The chemicals used in most brands can strip the skin of natural oils and lead to dryness.  DMAE, a common ingredient found in anti-wrinkle creams, can actually cause cell damage long-term, so be sure to check your labels!
  • Look for products that contain coenzyme Q10.  It has been shown to prevent surface damage to the skin.

What are your favorite anti-aging secrets?  I’ve heard that sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps to prevent facial wrinkles, but I’ve never actually tried it.  I do use some non-toxic anti-aging serums  and creams though.  I’m not sure if they work, but I’m a sucker for fun products!

Happy Friday!

So true- you can always tell how old a person really is by the condition of their neck. My skin tends to be dry, so I’m a huge fan of moisturizing. Hope you have a great weekend too!

  2. One more thing. I recently read that the products that you clean your home with can be damaging to your skin too. Be Careful!

  3. Love your tips, Erin! I use some face and eye serum. I’m like you — not sure if they work, but here’s hoping! I also think that being happy and managing stress (like you mention) is huge. And I think trying new things also makes us feel great/young! 🙂 Happy New Year to you!
