New Year’s goals & things to try in 2012

It is really healthy to make goals and find ways to constantly improve ourselves and our lives.  While we can make these changes at any time of the year, it is always nice to start off a new year hopeful with a positive fresh outlook.

This reminds me of a quote from Anne of Green Gables (one of my favorite books and movies)…

“Tomorrow is always fresh with no mistakes in it.”

At the start of each new year, I make a written list of goals that I’d like to accomplish or things I’d like to try- just like many other people do at this time of year.

In 2011, for example, I made a goal to read one book a month.  Because it was a pretty simple little goal, I was easily able to do it (and joining a book club didn’t hurt!).

Last year, I also wanted to make a whole roasted chicken and managed to tackle that goal with flying colors back in May.

Of course, the whole process completely grossed me out and turned me off from chicken for probably the rest of my life, but still…at least, I did it!

Here’s a glimpse of just a few of the things that I want to do this year:

  • Keep fresh flowers in the house.
  • Organize, organize, organize!  (I’ve actually been working on this like a psycho mad-organizing woman for the past few weeks.  It has gotten so bad that Michael asked if I plan to stick him and our dog Emma in an organizing bin.)
  • Take more walks.
  • Continue to read at least one book per month.
  • Call my long distance friends at least once a month.

I think that the most important thing with resolutions or goals is to take baby steps and start off small. This is especially true of things like dieting and working out.  I always encourage my clients to make little changes that they can easily sustain and eventually build upon.

If you want to make some tiny changes for your health in 2012 but aren’t sure where to start, here are some suggestions:

  • Listen to more Lionel Richie music.  (I’m totally kidding with this one, but I’ll love you forever if you do it!)

Do you have any goals for the New Year?  If so, I wish you the best of luck in accomplishing them all.  I’m off to organize some more! 🙂

Have a great day!

Traveling is always a fun goal! I’d love to make it to London this year. 🙂

  2. I have never heard of dry brushing, but I’m very tempted to order a brush from amazon right now!

Definitely check out my post on dry brushing. I cannot say enough good things about it. It’s awesome!

  3. I’m really working on cutting down on the soda intake. I don’t know why sometimes it’s hard for me say no to it. Anyway, I really agree on what you said about taking the steps toward goals bit by bit. I think that if we pressure ourselves more, it gets harder for us to attain these goals.
