Non-Toxic Beauty: Body

My very favorite part about switching to non-toxic beauty products has been discovering so many amazing lotions and body washes.

I’ll admit that I used to love (and still do) the scent of Jergens lotion and Dove body wash.  And, OK…the way that they lather is kind of fabulous.

But these products contain artificial fragrances and chemicals…and that’s something I don’t love.

As for products and techniques that are safe and clean and free of chemical ingredients, here are some of my favorites:

Dry brushing
I’ll go into more detail about this in the future, but in short…it is amazing!  It really gets the circulation going and removes dead skin cells, leaving your skin vibrant and smooth. It also helps to reduce cellulite.  How’s that for awesome?  I make sure to dry brush (mostly) every morning before I get into the shower.

100% Pure Body Scrubs
These are so incredible.  I seriously cannot say enough about them.  They leave my skin silky and smooth.  My favorite is the vanilla bean.  It smells so good that you won’t ever miss those toxic scrubs!

Brown Sugar
That’s right.  Brown sugar makes for a great body scrub.  Of course, you need to use it before it turns into a rock hard mass like brown sugar likes to do.

Body Washes

Nature’s Gate Velvet Moisture Body Wash-Papaya
These body washes truly live up to their name since they are extremely moisturizing.  They are also pretty inexpensive at about $7 for an 18 ounce bottle.

Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Liquid Soap
You can find Dr. Bronner’s wash at health stores and even at Target.  The peppermint scent is really invigorating- which is nice for those early morning showers.

Body Creams

100% Pure Organic Nourishing Body Cream Tubes
By now, you’ve probably figured out that I am pretty much obsessed with anything made by this brand.  Their body creams are seriously my all-time favorite products.  They just have such a luxurious feel and an amazing scent.  You’ll be sniffing yourself all day long if you apply any of these.

Desert Essence Coconut Hand and Body Cream
I love this cream because it makes me feel like I should be on a tropical island somewhere (with a drink in my hand, of course).  Like 100% Pure, it is very moisturizing…only it is cheaper at about half the price.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is so great because you can cook with it, use it in your hair, and as a body moisturizer.  You have to love a product so pure that you can eat it!

As always, be careful when selecting your products.  Make sure they do not contain ingredients, such as parabens (which have been linked to breast cancer) and Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfates  (which can cause skin irritation).

Stay tuned for future posts on deodorant (yay, armpits!), toothpaste, nail polish, and makeup.  I’m also working on a master list of my favorite non-toxic products.

What are your favorite natural body care products? Feel free to share any product that you like in general, and I’ll add them to my master list.  I’ve already received some wonderful suggestions on Twitter!

Have a wonderful day!

  1. I used to use brown sugar to exfoliate all the time. Much cheaper than the real stuff!

  2. i’m working on transitioning to more non-toxic beauty products, too. one day i woke up and realized that even though i’m so conscious about what i put into my body (food), i wasn’t thinking about what i put on it. my eyes have definitely been opened, and my skin feels better already. do you have any toothpaste recommendations? that’s the hardest one for me!

Good for you for making the change! 🙂 I am going to do a post on toothpaste soon, but I use Tom’s of Maine. I love it!

  3. I love coconut oil as a hair treatment and use it once a week. I also use essential oils like cedarwood, lavendar, and rosemary in my shampoos to add some nourishment to my scalp.

Yes! I LOVE using essential oils too! They make great perfumes too, which is nice since most perfumes are so toxic!

  4. I love this post and was so excited when I saw the 100% pure brand — I LOVE that stuff and just discovered it a few weeks ago. I have the scrub and the body wash in pink grapefruit and love both. I think come fall I’ll have to try something cozy like vanilla bean. Mmm! 🙂 I think I’ve told you, but I’m a big fan of devita skincare and I buy it from whole foods. Hugs!!

Oh, I am so happy that you’re a 100% Pure fan too! Did you know that you can order it from QVC too? 🙂 I need to try Devita Skincare. In fact, I’ll look it up right now! Hugs back! 🙂
