Nontoxic Brand Spotlight on Ava Anderson
Important update (1/26/2016): Since I initially wrote this post, some facts about the safety of Ava Anderson products have come to light, and unfortunately, I no longer recommend the brand. You can read the full story here, but in summary, whether they are company issues or supplier issues, the ingredients stated on the labels are not fully accurate and several products actually contain harmful ingredients. This is no way is a reflection of the innocent representatives who sell these products. If you’re in search of nontoxic products, be sure to see my most recent list of recommended brands.
I’ve heard a lot about Ava Anderson over the past year or so (mostly through Facebook and other social media). After finally researching the brand a little bit, I learned that Ava Anderson (the person) became interested in green beauty and personal care products at the age of 14 and even started blogging about them which is super impressive. I mean, at the age of 14, I was hanging out at the mall, talking to my friends about boys, and practically soaking myself in Plumeria lotion from Bath & Body Works.
I was even further impressed when I saw how well the brand rates on the EWG database. I love to see low numbers!
So, I was really excited when I found out that my friend Deb is an Ava Anderson consultant. By the way, I’ve known her ever since college, but I will not be sharing any throwback pictures today! Anyway, Deb sweetly sent me some products to try out (which you can expect to see here within the next several weeks), and she even let me pick her brain a little bit.
The Grass Skirt (TGS): If someone was looking to try one thing from Ava Anderson for the first time, what would you recommend?
As simple as this sounds, I would recommend the Lip Balm, especially this time of year, paired with the Sugar Lip Scrub. These two products are what converted me from my toxic ways over 2 years ago. I think my transition story will resonate with some folks.
I was an avid ChapStick user. I had multiple tubes, and I always HAD to have one with me, even at one hour-long meetings. If I couldn’t reapply when I “needed” it, I would feel like my lips were on fire! I’m talking 18+ applications per day! When I found out that ChapStick has petroleum in it (as in the same petroleum you put in your car for fuel, or burns in most candles) I was appalled! The stuff I was using to “hydrate” my lips was actually drying them out so I was dependent upon it completely! It made me so mad! So when my first pack of Ava Anderson Non Toxic Lip Balm and Sugar Lip Scrub arrived, I threw out my ChapStick. I was going cold turkey! And I haven’t looked back. I have an Ava Lip Balm in my purse and one at home, but I’m only applying maybe 4 times a day. The Sugar Lip Scrub was crucial to my transition, and winter-lip maintenance. It really helps to clear off the dead skin so your lips can naturally replenish, and glow! The best part is that you can eat the Sugar Lip Scrub if you want to. Not many other brands can say that.
TGS: What is your all-time favorite Ava Anderson beauty product?
That’s a tough one! I guess I would have to say our new Hyaluronic Acid. I started using it a couple of weeks ago and I can’t live without it. The Hyaluronic Acid is great for any skin type (I have Combination Skin). The active ingredients include organic hibiscus flower extract for skin-firming, and organic linden flower extract to naturally soften and condition the skin. I use it every morning before my Ava Moisturizer. The Hyaluronic Acid is lightweight and non-oily, and it intensely hydrates my skin for the whole day. It has already started reducing some of my (cough) fine lines and wrinkles. My skin looks lighter, brighter, and more youthful, and I don’t have that oily build up shine at the end of the day. It’s amazing!
TGS: My husband is really basic when it comes to body care and doesn’t like anything that smells too strong. What products are popular with men?
My husband is the same way! Our Body Butter would not be for him, then. It’s very citrusy smelling, which I love, but he turns up his nose! Men who use Ava love the Body Bar Soap. It has a very mild scent (pepperminty) and a nice lather. They also love the Shave Gel and the Aftershave & Moisturizer, also very mild scent that is super soothing.
For the Outdoorsy guy in your life, they love the Natural Bug Spray, too. My husband is an Eagle Scout and is always outdoors. He loves it. There’s no DEET, and repels gnats, flies, mosquitoes, and ticks! It’s even safe to use on newborns!!! It only smells slightly of lemon eucalyptus, lemongrass, and peppermint, and you don’t feel sticky or gross after using it.
The deodorants are also very popular with men. We offer a stick, with a fresh mint scent, and a spray deodorant, with a fresh lavender scent. They are completely safe, with no harmful chemicals, such as aluminum, propylene glycol, or parabens. It’s also our biggest recommendation to breast cancer survivors!
TGS: Now that the holidays are approaching, do you have any gift suggestions?
Our candles make wonderful gifts for teachers, bus drivers, or friends and family who are hard to buy for! They are made with organic coconut wax and organic beeswax, pure essential oils, and organic cotton wicks, with a 50-60 hour burn time. You won’t find that gross crude oil or petroleum in these, and you’ll feel safe burning them around your kids! We offer scents in peppermint, chai tea (think Fall!), lavender, and lemongrass.
If your gift recipient has chronically dry skin, eczema, rosacea, or other skin conditions, the Dream Cream is a must, especially this time of year. It’s non-greasy and so soothing. Pair it with our Lemon Sugar Body Scrub or our limited time only Candy Cane Sugar Body Scrub and your gift recipient will not have a dry, itchy winter, and they will love you for it!
We really have something for everyone on your list, though. Including pets!
TGS: Like a lot of my readers, I suffer from dry skin- especially during the winter months. What Ava Anderson products should I have in my winter beauty arsenal?
The most popular winter beauty remedies are the Dream Cream and one of the Body Scrubs, either Lemon Sugar or Candy Cane. The Dream Cream is great for eczema, rosacea, dry patches, and other skin conditions. It’s also great for rashes! The Body Scrubs are luxurious shower treats that you’ll love to slough off that dead skin.
I also love the Boo Boo Stick for this, believe it or not. It’s compact and portable in your purse or diaper bag. It’s anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory from organic botanicals, including arnica. Designed for use on scrapes, bug bites, and scratches to aid in healing, I actually use it on eczema spots and rashes, too! Most Ava Anderson products are very universal and multi-use, like the Boo Boo Stick! We have a whole document detailing all the multiple-uses!
During this Cold and Flu Season, I would be remiss to not mention our Hand Sanitizer. It is alcohol-free! It works with a blend of organic essential oils to cleanse and moisturize hands naturally and safely, and comes with two, 2 oz pocket size bottles and a 16 oz refill bottle.
I hope that you enjoyed learning a little bit about Ava Anderson today. A special thank you to Deb for her time and thoughtful answers!
