Visit to the vet & my glucose screening

Well, Lucy survived our first visit to the vet!

Thank goodness, the car ride there is less than 5 minutes because Lucy has already outgrown her kennel.  She had to ride in the seat next to me on the way there, but don’t let the ladylike pose fool you…

She crawled onto my lap about 5 seconds after I snapped this photo.

As soon as we walked through the front door of the animal hospital, she was an instant hit with everyone!

Lucy was a bit nervous in the exam room at first, but she gradually seemed more relaxed.

Aside from a slight case of ear mites, everything checked out just beautifully, but we do have to go back in about two weeks for a nasty old shot.

Lucy wasn’t the only one with an appointment at the doctor this week though…

I had my early glucose screening this morning (a test to detect gestational diabetes), and I was not a happy camper because I was told to fast before my appointment.

Being that I am such a breakfast person, I definitely wasn’t thrilled with the idea of skipping it.

I lucked out though and didn’t have to wait too long to be seen by the doctor.  I was eager to get the process rolling, so I could eat something!

The nurse told me that I had five minutes to drink the whole glucose solution (if you’re not familiar with it, it is basically sugar water).  Because it wasn’t exactly pleasant tasting, I decided to chug it as fast as I could to just be done with it.

I’m pretty sure that I dazzled the doctor and staff with my amazing chugging skills.

To be honest, the drink was pretty gross, but I expected it to be way worse.

After drinking the solution, I got the chance to listen to the baby’s beautiful, strong, amazing heartbeat.

Then I was told to sit in the waiting room for an hour until it was time to have my blood drawn.  The wait was painless because I entertained myself with some tabloid magazines.  There’s nothing like a little trash to pass the time away!

My veins weren’t cooperative though, so rather than getting one shot today, I ended up getting stuck four times.  It’s a good thing I can tolerate needles.

Anyway, I passed the test!  Woo hoo!

Unfortunately, I have to take it again in 5 weeks, but at least, I’m in the clear for now.

Needless to say, I ate a few snacks as soon as I got into the car.

I’ve actually been carrying these Buddy Fruits around with me a lot lately.  They are the perfect emergency snacks, especially if you’re pregnant and/or active and need to eat frequently.  I’m pretty sure that they are for kids, but I am technically feeding them to a child.  Plus, I’m a kid at heart.

Time to eat my lunch!  I’ve been eating the same old thing for weeks now, and I’m not bored yet.  I’ll share it with you next week.  🙂

Have you tried Buddy Fruits?

Do you have any fun plans for the weekend?

Is it supposed to be blazing hot where you live?  We’re in for a sticky, sweaty, hot 106 degrees here in Charlotte tomorrow.  I have a feeling that, for once in my life, I won’t be complaining that I’m too cold!

Have a great weekend!

  1. Aw, I remember the joy of listening to your unborn child’s heartbeat. It is pure magic…

I have no special plans this weekend and it is pretty hot (93) here right now. Here is northern Wisconsin. Hot usually means humid here as well. I don’t envy you being pregnant in the summer.

Stay cool. And thank you for your visit.

  2. I think I’m the only person in history who asked for more of the glucose drink. I thought it was delicious.

And that woosh-woosh-woosh baby heartbeat sound is the best. I loved that.

Love your sweet puppy pics. Can’t believe you didn’t name her Lionel. UNLESS! You are saving that name for the baby???

    • You are hilarious. I’ll bring you to my next appointment, and you can drink the glucose solution for me! Haha.

I already asked if we could name both the baby and the dog Lionel. Unfortunately. the name gets rejected every time. 🙁

  3. Congrats to you and Lucy coming out for the better after your appointments. Love the snacks and might have to check into it:) I think it is going to be hot here, but being in the desert a dry heat (like a walk in oven)! Playing it by ear here for the weekend:) Have a Wonderful Weekend!

  4. Ughh, I hated the glucose test. Hated it. I nearly passed out before it was over with, why I don’t know, but I remember being very sick from either the drink or the fasting.

Your dog is adorable!! A-fricken-dorable! I want one! Well, actually, I have two of my own, but she is something else!

Good luck with baby and puppy!

    • The glucose solution made me feel terrible for the rest of the day and zapped all of my energy…so it wasn’t just you!

      Do you have Goldendoodles? 🙂

  5. Hey Erin! I hope you had a great fourth! My curiosity got the better of me when I saw your tweet about all the fireworks scaring the pup and just had to come see what she looked like…such a cutie pie! What breed is she?

I’ve never had a glucose test, but I hear that stuff is pretty awful. Glad to hear everything went ok though and you got to those yummy car snacks. I picked up some of those Buddy Fruits the other day…or actually my 5 year old boyfriend did…along with a box of peanut butter chocolate Moon Pies! Haha! They are definitely tasty and I love how convenient the little packs are!

I work in a hospital as a CAT scan tech and we have to start a lot of IV’s on fasting patients. Just a little tip…if you chug as much water as you can stand the day before, your veins will usually pop right up to say hello! 🙂

    • Hi Heather!

Lucy is a Goldendoodle. She is such a sweetheart, and she seems to be growing by the minute!

The Buddy Fruits are so convenient! I even saw that they sell them in bulk at BJs. I might have to stock up!

Thanks for the tip about drinking more water before my appointment! I’ll definitely try that next time. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by. Hope you had a great 4th!
