Weekend recap (Pearl Fryar & a teething baby)

Being that our beach trip was a total bust, MT and I decided to make the most of the weekend.

I was craving Mexican food (which can apparently still happen even when I’m not pregnant), so we kicked off the weekend with dinner at 1900 Mexican Grill.

I’ve been hearing some favorable reviews about it from people who really know their stuff, and let me tell ya- the restaurant didn’t disappoint.

The food was really fresh, the atmosphere was great, and it is now my new favorite Mexican restaurant.

The weekend also included a really fun drive to the little town of Bishopville, South Carolina where we visited the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden.

I know that you’re probably thinking that a trip to the dentist sounds like more fun, but it was an incredible experience.

The garden, which is free and open to the public, was first created by a man named Pearl Fryar over thirty years ago- even though he had no topiary experience.

Pearl’s initial goal was to win the Yard of the Month award, and not only did he become the first African American to win the award, he created a gorgeous abstract garden that people all over the world come to visit.

The garden is also filled with incredible sculptures that Pearl created from scrap metal.

It was such an honor to meet and talk to Pearl while we were there.  He even got off his tractor just to pose for a photo with me.

That evening, MT and I watched a documentary about Pearl and the garden called A Man Named Pearl.  It is definitely worth watching, especially if you love documentaries.

The next day was a little rough because poor Michael woke up with his first fever.

After having a minor freak out upon seeing that his temperature was 101,2, I called our pediatrician’s office, and one of the nurses walked me through the things that I needed to do and things that I needed to look out for during the next few days.

Unfortunately, Michael’s little condition meant that we were not able to stay at my sister’s baby shower for very long that afternoon (and I didn’t get to eat any of the delicious food!).

Luckily, Michael seems to be much better, but now two of his top teeth are coming in which has been causing him lots of discomfort. The teething process is so brutal for babies- and their mommies!

Any tips on how to comfort a teething baby?  I feel like I’ve tried almost everything, but I’d love to hear some more suggestions.

Have a great day!
